Saul Jarcho, A Medical Historian; Death: September 10, 2000
Distinguished internist and medical historian. He was the 1995 recipient of a gold medal from the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy in recognition of his book, "Quinine's Predecessor: Francesco Torti and the Early History of Cinchona." The author of some 250 articles, chapters, and reviews on the history of medicine, pathology, and paleopathology, he was a member of the pathology faculty at P&S from 1936 to 1942, before being called to serve his country in the Medical Intelligence Division of the Office of the US Surgeon General during World War II, ultimately becoming director of the division. For that service he was awarded an Army Commendation Ribbon. Launching a private medical practice after the war, he made time to pursue research in the history of medicine. Following his retirement from medical practice, he continued his historical research and served as consultant to the National Library of Medicine. He was past president of the American Association for the History of Medicine and editor of the Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine.
